Case Stories

Functional Behaviour Assessment was used to write an Individual Behaviour Support Plan for a student.  Relationships between the school and the family were strained. The process of the Functional Behaviour Assessment helped to mend relationships and create a plan that was written and implemented by staff. When reviewed after two months the plan had been successful in improving learning outcomes, time on task and fewer behaviour incidents. Relationships between family and school were much improved. The ongoing review will be undertaken as contexts change.

Sample Case Study 1- Student

A school had a high number of referrals to the office due to behaviour. Staff had little cohesion.  A School-wide Evaluation Tool data collection was carried out and shared with the school staff. Staff voted to begin the School-wide Positive Behaviour Support process. With support, the school moved to data-based decision-making, effective systems for teaching and supporting behaviour. The staff became more cohesive and the culture of the school slowly changed. Behaviour incidents referred to the office dropped by 50% in the first year.  After 5 years the school has increased in numbers and the culture of the school is strong and positive.

Sample Case Study 2- School

A year 1 boy was at risk of being excluded from the school. School staff felt they had done everything possible and were considering asking parents to find another school. After a Functional Behaviour Assessment, increased understanding of the causes of the behaviour and training in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention staff felt empowered to help the student through his anxiety and manage his behaviour. A team approach included an external psychologist who was able to work with the school.

Sample Case Study 3- Student

During 2012 Linda was able to support key School Service Centre staff to increase their skills in supporting Functional Behaviour Assessments in schools. At the end of 2012, there were 3 other office-based personnel able to assist school staff to implement FBA in schools. The outcome was an Individual Behaviour Plan for students based on the function of the behaviour and increased understanding of school staff. This process helped to avoid the exclusion of students for reasons of behaviour.

Our Approach

Confidentiality

Confidentiality is paramount in our practice with schools and individuals. We prioritise privacy and trust, ensuring that personal information remains completely confidential.

Building Capacity

We provide excellent support to schools and individuals, helping to improve behaviour. As we progress, we empower and train school staff to take on the roles we have been filling so improvement can continue after we leave. Succession planning is advised staff as staff will move on and take those skills to their next school.

Wrap Around Care for Students

We work with families and external agencies to support students and meet practical needs when required. This could be helping the school source a washing machine, planning an event for families, or sourcing extra food for teenagers. Functional Behaviour Assessment and Individual Behaviour Support Plans include wrap around care, changing environments and staff responses as well as teaching students new ways to communicate their needs. Trauma Aware Schooling is key to understanding behaviour and is considered in all our work.
